Save the Dates – Downtown Workshops Planned
The Downtown Leadership Committee is hosting two upcoming events aimed at engaging people in conversations about the future of downtown Gunnison.
The first event, dubbed the Discovery Workshop, will explore the topics of safe streets, downtown vibrancy and authenticity, strengthening connections between Western and the community, and creating a healthy business environment. These topics emerged as key goals during the first phase of the Gunnison Vibrancy Initiative project, which took place over the summer.
At this event, participants will work with the Downtown Leadership Committee to finalize the goals for downtown Gunnison. People will also learn about what other communities are doing to foster vibrant downtowns, create safer streets, and support downtown businesses and provide input on how the city might use those practices in Gunnison.
Gary Pierson, a member of the Downtown Leadership Committee, said that Gunnison could learn a lot about its own future from other communities.
“We don’t have to reinvent the wheel here. Gunnison’s downtown is unique and has its own character, no doubt about that. But what have other communities done to strengthen their downtown economy or bicycle and pedestrian safety, for example? We could learn a lot from other creative approaches that might apply to us,” Pierson said.
Following the Discovery Workshop, the Downtown Leadership Committee will host a “Downtown Action Planning” workshop on November 1 through 3. The three-day Action Planning workshop will build off the results of the Downtown Discovery Workshop by developing specific design concepts and tasks the city could complete to implement the community’s goals for downtown.
The Action Planning workshop will be held in the Aspinall-Wilson Center on the Western Campus and is open to the public.
The work from each day of the workshop will be shared with the public at Open Houses from 5:30 to 7:30 pm on Wednesday, November 1 and Thursday, November 2. The Open Houses will provide the best opportunity for community members to review and provide feedback on the design concepts for downtown Gunnison. Your feedback is important. Please join us if you can.
